TOPIC: What is the state of play as regards Linux?

What is the state of play as regards Linux? 6 years 6 months ago #1412

Interest has been stirred up at our organisation vis a vis the state of play as regards developing Linux applications in C++ using XE8. Is this possible? Will it ever be possible? If so, when? I am assuming that you can write C++ in XE8 for targetting Mac OSX (a flavour of UNIX), and that Linux is a flavour of Unix. So, it should be possible, or at least, nearly possible, yes?

Server-side Linux is on the RAD Studio roadmap but a LSB style Linux distribution is not yet supported. As you pointed out we do support OS X which is a BSD core and POSIX compliant. As well we support Android NDK which is basically a Linux core with POSIX compliance. So the toolchains (compilers, linkers, etc.) are one part but also the RTL port as well as key component framework is the rest of the work.

Have you got a link to that C++ Builder roadmap? Does what you say mean that we will have to wait quite a while for a client-side Linux version of C++ Builder (both 32 and 64 bit)?

I don't think the roadmap even discusses client side linux support (that is, VCL or Firemonkey on Linux, is not on the roadmap).

Yes, C++ support is on the roadmap too although as Warren pointed out we are focusing on server-side Linux not clients.
