TOPIC: Quick reply Vs Reply

Quick reply Vs Reply 6 months 2 weeks ago #13678

Can someone tell me what the "quick reply" button does on the forum ?
Is there a "help" page related to the forum ? (I'm "old school" and like documentation).

"Quick Reply" just gives you a simple Edit field to type into.

"Reply" gives you a full formatting editor.

Hi Remy,

Many thanks for this. Does the "Quick reply" editior allow entry of text without attempting to convert to html I wonder. This would solve much C++ posting confusion where people include things like

#include <math>
// above line was entered as #include open triangle bracket math close triangle bracket

I will post this and then view the reply. I see the math correctly enclosed by triangle brackets then I know it does solve the problem and in this case we should encourage everyone to post c++ exceprts using the "quick reply" button.

On the basis of following the principle behind the s/w development rule: "Name a function by what it does, not what it is used for" maybe these two buttons should be re-named....

"Quick Reply" - change this to "Reply (text)"
"Reply" - change this to "Reply (HTML)"

Is anyone in the forum design team listening?

It has been my experience that trying to post code snippets in this forum is a PITA, no matter whether you use Reply or Quick Reply. It never turns out well. I've given up on it.
