"Modeling Code with Delphi Enterprise" webinar, Mar 8th, 11AM Amsterdam   The "Why Upgrade To Enterprise" webinar series continues! Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 8th, 11am CET, I'm going to do a live developer webinar about "Modeling Code with Delphi Enterprise". This webinar will be recorded and repeated later during the day for other timezones. The webinar is free, but you need to register here. UML Modeling is a very rich subject. It is probably one of the least used Delphi features. Maybe because of the visual "Rapid Application Development" paradigm that D...
The ACM A.M. Turing Award - my thoughts for next year's selection On June 15 and 16 of 2012 we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alan Turing (June 23, 1912) in San Francisco (http://turing100.acm.org/final_program/tcc_final_program.pdf) with 33 living ACM A.M. Turing Award winners!  It was especially great to see Nicklaus Wirth on the "Programming Languages: Past Achievements and Future Challenges" panel along with Susan Graham, Barbara Liskov and Frances Allen. You can watch the replays of the sessions at http://amturing.acm.org/acm_tcc_webcast...

Want more...Languages I recently re-watched "The Lord of the Rings" (LOTR) movie trilogy. Remember the LOTR phrase, "One Ring To Rule Them All"?  Could there ever be "One Programming Language To Rule Them All" (OPLTRTA)?  In the early years of our industry there were loads of new languages appearing each year (History of Programming Languages).  There were also attempts to create best of all worlds programming languages.  PL/I was an attempt to take parts of ALGOL, FORTRAN, COBOL, and added numerous data types, dynam...

Want more...Productivity On June 2, 2011 the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 1.8% (annual rate) increase in non-farm business sector labor during the first quarter of 2011. For the manufacturing sector there was a 4.2% growth in productivity for Q1 2011. Most businesses measure the productivity of their employees.  In Software Project Management we can measure the completion of development milestones, feature completion, bug close ratios, check-ins, and other aspects of developing software...

Want more...Time We each have a finite amount of time on this planet.  I'm sure that you all want to enjoy every moment of every day, I do!  Groucho Marx said, "Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana." John F. Kennedy said, "We must use time as a tool, not as a crutch". The Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones wrote the song, "Time Waits for No One." The Rolling Stones also recorded the song "Time Is on My Side". There are many quotes involving time, the lack of time, wanting more...

Want more...Toys Continuing my month of July theme about wanting more, this time it is Toys.  Peter Pan, by J.M. Barrie,  said he would never grow up, never grow up, never grow up, not me ("I Won't Grow Up").  That's me in spades.  I suspect that many developers also have a lot of kid inside themselves.  We have toys.  We want more toys.  My list includes nerf weapons, fishing rods and reels, frisbees, scuba gear, and golf clubs. For technical toys most developers probably have a smart phone, an iPad, AppleTV...
