Want more...Clouds I love singer/songwriters.  One of my all time favorites is Joni Mitchell.  Joni Mitchell wrote, in the song "Both Sides Now", "I've looked at clouds from both sides now, from up and down, and still some how, it's clouds illusions I recall, I really don't know clouds at all".  We have so many choices for cloud computing architectures and services, one can spend a lot of time exploring the options and figuring out how to include them in your applications.  Previously, I wrote about "Want more...S...

Want more...Sugar Julie Andrews, as Mary Poppins, sang "Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down." The "Spoonful of Sugar" song starts "In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun and snap the job's a game".  When I am programming, I am having fun.  Yes, it is also a job, but, creating software is a job, a game, and total fun.  In programming languages, some people might claim that certain language features are "syntactic sugar".  The claim is that syntax was added to m...

Want more...Wizards I just got out of the movie theater where I watched "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows part 2".  I won't spoil the movie for any of you who have not seen the movie yet.  What I can say, is the world needs a lot more wizards and a lot less muggles.  There is a Harry Potter Wizarding World at Universal Studios in Orlando Florida.  You can learn to be a wizard and have fun doing it. With all of the troubles around the world, we could use a lot more people to volunteer to help in every way. Ba...

Want more...Components Our Embarcadero Technologies developer tools come with many components.  Delphi XE and C++Builder XE include ("out of the box") more than 500 visual controls.  RadPHP XE comes with more than 75 visual components.  Consistently, our developer surveys tell us that our customers use a lot of additional components: commercial, shareware, free, and open source. For my HD TVs and stereo units (three of them), I also have a lot of add-on components including an equalizer, power amplifier, CD player,...

Want more...Security As someone who travels a lot, I appreciate all of the work that security and safety teams do all over the world.  Some might complain about the long lines to get through security but I am very thankful for all that is done to protect me. We live in an online world where we all must keep track of our personal information security.  There are too many stories about stolen passwords, credit card account numbers, network intrusions, and social security numbers. As developers we have many tools we...

Want more...Revolution Today is July 14, 2011.  It's Bastille Day in France.  This morning I got up at 3:30am to watch Stage 12 of the 2011 Tour de France.  Stage 12 was the first stage to enter the mountains of the Pyrenees which are on the border of France and Spain.  The stage 12 winner was Samuel Sanchez from Spain.  The overall tour leader is still Thomas Voeckler from France.  All of this is perfectly fitting for this French National Day. Bastille Day celebrates the Fête de la Fédération, July 14, 1790, the firs...

Want more...Fun For me, programming is fun.  It's pure joy for me to create programs from nothing.  Even though our jobs are also work, there is also a lot of joy and fun in everything software engineers do.  For Embarcadero Technologies development is also serious business.  One of Embarcadero Technologies R&D's principles of a winning engineering culture is "fun improves creativity, so have fun while you work." Randy Pausch, Computer Science Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, who passed away in 2...

Want more...Productivity On June 2, 2011 the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 1.8% (annual rate) increase in non-farm business sector labor during the first quarter of 2011. For the manufacturing sector there was a 4.2% growth in productivity for Q1 2011. Most businesses measure the productivity of their employees.  In Software Project Management we can measure the completion of development milestones, feature completion, bug close ratios, check-ins, and other aspects of developing software...

Want more...Storage I have a Data Robotics Drobo FS network storage appliance at home with ten terabytes of disk space.  That seems like a lot of disk space, but one thing I know is that you can never have enough storage.  Thankfully, Delphi and C++Builder support the Microsoft Azure API and you can access the Azure Queue, Table, and Blob storage services.  You can also easily use Amazon S3 storage using Delphi and C++Builder.  Marco Cantu has written a blog article about his Delphi Amazon S3 programming example at...

Want more...Speed Quintus Arrius, in the movie Ben Hur, implores the rowers to give him "Battle speed!... Attack speed!... Ramming speed!"  On October 15, 1997, the rocket powered car, ThrustSSC, driven by Andy Green, set a world land speed record of 763 mph. ThrustSSC is the first car to break the sound barrier on land. The qote, "I feel the need, the need for speed", from the movie Top Gun, says a lot about what drives our native code compiler team. Who doesn't want more speed and fast optimizing compilers? ...
