Want more...Time We each have a finite amount of time on this planet.  I'm sure that you all want to enjoy every moment of every day, I do!  Groucho Marx said, "Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana." John F. Kennedy said, "We must use time as a tool, not as a crutch". The Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones wrote the song, "Time Waits for No One." The Rolling Stones also recorded the song "Time Is on My Side". There are many quotes involving time, the lack of time, wanting more...

Want more...Freedom It's the Fourth of July (Independence Day) here in the US.  This is a day to celebrate freedom (and maybe to blow some things up).  When you think of the word freedom, what comes to mind?  There are many songs about freedom - http://www.mcgath.com/freesongs.html.  There are many people who are still fighting to be free and many others who are giving thanks for their freedom. The English Bill of Rights (1689) lists several rights and freedoms including: freedom of petition without retribution ...

Want more...Knowledge I am in the constant search for knowledge of all kinds. While I continue my search in the areas of software engineering and computer programming, I also explore other areas where software might be used.  In my undergraduate studies at Cal Poly Computer Science (1969-1973) I took a range of non-computer science courses as part of my degree.  The Cal Poly "Learn by Doing" philosophy expanded our knowledge to include areas where computers and software would be used in my future career.  After gradu...

Want more...Toys Continuing my month of July theme about wanting more, this time it is Toys.  Peter Pan, by J.M. Barrie,  said he would never grow up, never grow up, never grow up, not me ("I Won't Grow Up").  That's me in spades.  I suspect that many developers also have a lot of kid inside themselves.  We have toys.  We want more toys.  My list includes nerf weapons, fishing rods and reels, frisbees, scuba gear, and golf clubs. For technical toys most developers probably have a smart phone, an iPad, AppleTV...

Want more...Food A few weeks ago, I sent emails to friends, family members, co-workers, and educators asking them what they wanted more of.  I asked what they need more of, craved more of, would like to have more of, to hope for more of, and what they dream for more of.  I did not set any specific context for their replies.  Some chose to focus on personal wants.  Others listed the "want more" in their professional career. For the month of July I am going to blog about some of "more" thoughts and lists I rece...

Celebrating 26 years here in Scotts Valley - a programmer's journey On Monday, June 17, 1985 (twenty-six years ago today), I started working for Philippe Kahn at Borland International in Scotts Valley California.  Twenty six years working on programming languages and for programmers.  The fun of being a part of the software development tools world continues today. While I'm reminded that this is a job, it is also so much fun to be able to be a part of moving the programming world forward, one day at a time. My journey started in Eureka California on June 13, ...

Big data and getting bigger all the time When you read or hear the term "Big Data" what do you think about?  Do you visualize an extremely large database or data warehouse?  Do you think about architectures and algorithms for storing and processing big data?  When haven't we had big data in relation to the systems and services that we are asked to program?  Is yesterday's big data small data today?  With the Internet and the number of humans creating and consuming data, I guess we do have really big data today and it is only getting bi...
