To Build a FHIR Data Federation Service

Rethinking User Experience Delivery in Healthcare

“The trouble with him was that he was not able to imagine. He was quick and ready in the things of life, but only in the things, and not in their meanings.” — To Build A Fire, by Jack London

Among the hardest unsolved problems of data interoperability in healthcare is how to present conflicting information from disparate systems to users for resolution in a form and fashion that is semantically meaningful on the one hand, but not cognitively burdensome on the other—which is to say, in a form that is “usable” by a mere human being.

In this case, the human beings we are talking about are clinicians who spend all day staring at computer screens that are typically over-engineered and difficult to navigate, adversely affecting their well-being as they attempt to improve the well-being of others, and increasing the cost of care, to boot. EHRs and healthcare applications for this reason generally get terrible reviews by their captive clinical users, and justly so. But how can the state of the art in this complex field be improved? Can anything “change the game”? Or is the already-bad healthcare user experience (or UX) doomed only to get worse when data truly becomes interoperable across institutions?

Nobody knows the final answer to the healthcare usability problem that interoperability itself poses, if there is a final answer; and industry standards like Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources, or FHIR, though helpful for the data exchange part of the problem, are still way behind the curve in defining how UX should be delivered in an interoperable world.

But Embarcadero RAD Server can play an important role in creating a profitable market to solve it. The key is first to get the disparate data federated and in a standardized form that plays to RAD Studio’s strengths as a rapid UX development environment in Delphi or C++. With the help of Apex technologies on a well-architected Embarcadero stack, the UX problem can at least be isolated and tackled directly.

In this webinar, Bob Calco, Chief Architect & Lead Developer at Apex Data Solutions, LLC, will illustrate the problem, and show how Delphi-powered Apex technologies like Apex Perseus, Athena and Muse can drive a full-stack data federation and reconciliation solution embracing the latest healthcare standards for data exchange to factor out orthogonal infrastructure and ETL challenges. This, in turn, will open competition and spur innovation finally to crack the interoperability UX nut (often referred to as the “last mile” problem in healthcare) on the latest Embarcadero distributed computing and IoT development platform.
