New Ubuntu 7.04 announced

Arguably the most natural platform for deploying Delphi for PHP applications is Linux. There are countless Linux distros available in the Internet. Which one to choose? I've been playing recently with Ubuntu, and I like it more and more. Ubuntu comes in two basic editions: desktop and server. There are different ubuntu desktop editions depending of the desktop environment used: ubuntu desktop (GNOME), kubuntu (KDE), xubuntu (Xfce) and edubuntu (customized for educational use). However for deploying Delphi for PHP application we need ubuntu server distribution.

The Ubuntu 7.04 Server was announced today, and is supposed to be available for download this week. The Server Edition is based on Debian and does not contain a graphical desktop environment. It has no open ports after the installation and contains only the essential software needed to build a secure server. Why this distro is interesting? Primarily because it comes with preconfigured LAMP stack. Ubuntu 7.04 Server contains the latest version of Apache (2.2.3), MySQL (5.0.38), Python (2.5) and PHP (5.2.1).

I will definitely try some Delphi for PHP sample applications on Ubuntu 7.04 Server when it is available.

Ubuntu 7.04 is now available for download. Just started downloading iso images. One cool thing about the ubuntu install cd is that you do not have to install anything to your hard-drive in order to try it out. It will just boot from cd-rom and will give options to install to hard-drive or not.
