An interesting customer with Vista

Posted by on in Blogs
I am a pretty direct person and do support in pretty much the same way. Over the years it has gotten me in trouble at times. I had customer that I was very direct with last week where I thought for sure things might not go well. However, I wasn't going to change my style.

The initial question went something like, I'm making an application with BDS 2006 with InterBase 7.5 using BDE on Vista and something isn't going right. Are their any know issues on InterBase with Vista?

I came back with,Well, BDS is not certified on Vista, but it would logical it will be in the near future. InterBase 7.5 is not certified on Vista. We won't certify InterBase 7.5 on Vista, but is logical to think InterBase 2007 will be in the near future. BDE was deprecated years ago. It will not be certified on Vista.

So, basically I told her she needed to change the way she developed, she couldn't do development on Vista today, and she'll have to upgrade to be able to do so in the future. It didn't seem like a great story, but I believed it served her best, so I stuck with it, anticipating a backlash. Guess what? She thanked me for the complete story and went on her way apparently happy! I'm hoping we'll have the Vista products she needs in the near future and we'll be able to keep her as a customer.

It pays to be direct and I appreciate you being forthright. Customers want Yes/No to plan their strategies. I Remember a customer told me iwant ifless/but statement.
