Upgrade SKU to be Discontinued by March 31st

Dear Customers,

 

A few years back we introduced our Update Subscription program. This approach to licensing was a response to dominant industry trends to move away from periodic Upgrades to ongoing Subscription relationships that deliver continuous value to customers. Our Product Roadmap and Release Strategy are aligned with this philosophy as we strive to make upgrades to new releases much easier. I don’t think that we will ever be perfect here, but we certainly will try.

 

We have many long-term passionate customers that are used to a certain way of purchasing our products. Therefore we retained the one-off Upgrades SKU (i.e. Purchase Option) for quite some time. Our experience is that customers love plenty of advanced notice to any changes. Many of you let us know this loud and clear, and we appreciate it.

 

Our goal is to make it easy for everyone to take advantage of the latest features and fixes we’ve developed. Today, most our customers moved to Update Subscription and the Upgrades SKU simply does not make as much sense. It is unnecessarily complex to maintain and we hear from multiple customers that with some of the more aggressive promotions, it makes purchasing decisions confusing. Pretty much all other vendors have discontinued that SKU for similar reasons.

 

This Quarter (ending on March 31st) will be the last to offer Upgrades. In keeping with our advance notices practice, we want to give plenty of time to customers who for any reason want to use the Upgrades SKU to do so. We ran several Amnesties (i.e. ability to Upgrade from older versions) in the last couple of years, and we will run one more as we retire this SKU. We will continue to offer easy paths to move to higher Editions, as we make both the Enterprise and Architect editions even more attractive for enterprise application development. It is not a huge change, but nevertheless, we want to minimize surprises. If you have been on the fence about Upgrading your old version, now will be a good time and remember that you get your first year of Update Subscription included.

 

Together, we made great strides in popularizing RAD Studio for Delphi and C++ development. We carefully monitor competitive offerings and we strongly believe that the value customers receive with our products is far superior to the cost. I hope you feel the same way. We are committed to continue investing in our products to make your ROI calculations a “no-brainer”. I am really excited about some of the upcoming releases. Both 10.2.3, this quarter, and the many releases in the quarters to come, will deliver some awesome functionality and quality improvements. 2018 be another year that sees the momentum of Delphi and C++ Builder increase - Go RAD Studio!!!

InterBase and Windows 10 Anniversary Update

NOTE: This problem goes away, if you install InterBase XE7 Update 7 or any build of InterBase 2017.

We are getting reports from customers who are unable to connect to InterBase after applying the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. The error could be:

"Cannot attach to password database"

or

I/O error for file "C:\ProgramData\Application Data\Embarcadero\InterBase\gds_db\admin.ib"
Error while trying to open file
The system cannot find the file specified."

Since the release of InterBase XE3, the location of the password database, admin.ib has been determined by the IBCONFIG setting, APPDATA_DIRECTORY. The default value for this is

APPDATA_DIRECTORY         "C:\ProgramData\Application Data\Embarcadero\InterBase\<instance name>"

It turns out that Application Data is not a real directory but is what is known as a junction point that just points back to c:\programdata. When the Windows 10 update is run, this junction point is deleted. The way around the problem is to do the following:

  1. Run Notepad or your favourite text editor as Administrator.
  2. Open IBCONFIG. This is located in the InterBase installation directory
  3. Locate the APPDATA_DIRECTORY setting.
  4. Change this to APPDATA_DIRECTORY         "C:\ProgramData\Embarcadero\InterBase\<instance name>"
  5. Save the file and restart InterBase.

 


Package c:\program files (x86)\embarcadero\studio\16.0\bin\DUnitX...

If you uninstall Rad Studio XE8 using all the defaults, then install Rad Studio XE8 Subscription Update 1, you will get the following error at start up:


Package c:\program files (x86)\embarcadero\studio\16.0\bin\DUnitXRuntime220.bpl can't be installed because it is not a design time package.
Do you want to attempt to load this package the next time a project is loaded?


DUnitXRuntime220.bpl was incorrectly marked as a Runtime package in the original release of Rad Studio XE8 and this is corrected with Update 1. If you uninstall using all the defaults, all your IDE settings are unchanged when you install Rad Studio XE8 Subscription Update 1. This will cause the IDE to attempt to DUnitXRuntime220.bpl as it did in the past and this error to occur. You may safely not load the package in the future. If you want your IDE settings to be set to the all the defaults (and loose all IDE customizations), then launch your product with the -cleanregistry argument, as documented here:docwiki.embarcadero.com/RADStudio/XE8/en/IDE_Command_Line_Switches_and_Options


Manual uninstall of Appmethod 1.15

Abstract: How to delete all the files just in case you need to for some unknown reason. Note: This process is recommended for field testers before installing the RTM release.

 Under your Control Panel's Program and Features Add/Remove Program uninstall the following entries:

  • Appmethod 1.15
  • Appmethod 1.15 Help System

 Please follow these instructions to remove any leftover files:

  1. Remove the C:\Program Files (x86)\Embarcadero\Studio\15.0 directory
  2. Remove the C:\Users\Public\Documents\Embarcadero\Studio\15.0 directory
  3. Remove the C:\Users\esvmw7prox64\Documents\Appmethod_1.15_Downloads directory
  4. Remove the C:\ProgramData\Embarcadero\Studio\15.0 directory
  5. Remove the C:\ProgramData\Embarcadero\BDS\15.0 directory
  6. Remove the following folders with a GUID name in C:\ProgramData\
    1. {0A0496A9-60CC-425A-907C-B223CAA921B7} and/or {74FD2943-877E-4835-837D-216C50ECE815} (help)
    2. {C1FF573A-597E-4E37-9A2A-004D3D201024} and/or {CF504BCC-79FC-4455-BF0B-F2866429F689} (main installer)
  7. Remove the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Embarcadero\BDS\15.0 registry key
  8. Remove the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Embarcadero\BDS\15.0 registry key

 Take into account that C:\ProgramData is a hidden folder (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hidden-files has instructions to show them).

 On 64-bit machines:

     Program Files = C:\Program Files (x86)\Embarcadero\Studio\15.0

     Registry keys = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Embarcadero\BDS\15.0

Downloading and Activating Appmethod

This articles details how to download and activate Appmethod. If you have any questions or need help, contact our support team and they'll be happy to help out.

 

To have your serial number re-sent to you, follow steps 1 and 2 below. Clicking on the download button will re-send your serial number. You can cancel the download once it begins.

 

Download Appmethod:

Step 1: Visit www.appmethod.com/downloads

If you are not logged into your Embarcadero Developer Network (EDN) account you will be prompted to log in. If you do not have an EDN account, click on the sign up link to register an account.

 

Step 2: Click on "Download"

Clicking the download button will start downloading the Appmethod Installer and send you the serial number to activate your Appmethod install.

 

Step 3: Install Appmethod

Double-click on the Appmethod installer (check your downloads folder) to start the Appmethod installation. Appmethod will begin downloading the additional files and libraries needed to install Appmethod. Download times will vary based on your internet connection so please be patient.

 

Step 4: Activate Appmethod

Follow the install wizard to install Appmethod. You will be asked for a serial number which was emailed to you when you clicked on the download button. The email is titled "Welcome to Appmethod" and may be in spam folder. If you need your serial number re-sent to you, simply log back into appmethod and visit the download page. Then click on the download button and your serial number will be re-sent to you. You can cancel the download once it starts and you do not need to re-install Appmethod at this point.

Starting Appmethod results in Product or License Validation Error

Q. I’ve installed and registered Appmethod, yet when it starts I am brought to a web page with the error “Product or License Validation Error”. How can I fix this?

  • By far the most common cause for this error is having files or applications not provided by Embarcadero that are copied into the bin folder below where Appmethod is installed. Only files provided by Embarcadero may reside in the bin folder. Common files which are mistakenly copied to the bin folder are third party components and database drivers. The easiest way to determine if this might be your problem is to list files by timestamp and look for files created before or after the release of your product.
  • Having the F-Secure AntiVirus software installed. Please contact F-Secure for information on how to configure F-Secure AntiVirus software so it will not cause this problem.
  • If the Digital Signature used by Appmethod cannot be verified. To determine if this is an issue for you, follow these steps:
      • From Windows Explorer, right click on bds.exe in the bin folder of directory you installed your product (c:\Program Files\Embarcadero\AppMethod\13.0 by default) and select Properties.
      • Select the Digital Signatures tab
      • Select Embarcadero Technologies signer and click the Details button.
      • Click the View Certificate Button in the Digital Signature Details Dialog.
      • If the Certificate Dialog looks as follow, the following information should resolve this issue for you.


Appmethod System Requirements

The Appmethod tools run on Windows Vista, 7 and 8. Appmethod can also be run on a virtual machine (VM) such as VMware or Parallels.

Macs running OS X 10.7 or later. iPhone 3GS or later, iPad, or iPod Touch 4th Generation or later running iOS 6.0 or later. Android phones and tablets with ARM7 processors, running Android Gingerbread (2.3.3-2.7), Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.3 or 4.0.4) or Jelly Bean (4.1.x, 4.2.x or 4.3.x).

File size for download:

  • Initial zip download is approximately 50MB.
  • Additional download size may be up to 3GB, depending on features and options selected.
  • Download times will vary based on network speed.
