Kylix 3 does not accept it's serial number

Written by Embarcadero USA on . Posted in Usability

Problem:

I installed the copy of Kylix I got as a bonus when I purchased Delphi 7 or C++Builder 6. One of the Kylix IDEs runs fine, however, the other IDE tells me that my serial number and license key are invalid. What's wrong?

Answer:

Actually, nothing is wrong in this case. The bundled copies of Kylix in Delphi 7 and BCB 6 are licensed so that you can only use the side of Kylix that corresponds to which product you purchased. You can only use the Delphi side of Kylix if you purchased Delphi, and only the C++ side if you purchased C++ Builder.

Problem:

In C# Builder, I click File|New and the only choice I have is to create a new text file. Why is this happening and how do I fix it?

Answer:

Something in your registry was corrupted. To resolve this run regedit and navigate to HKCU\Software\Borland\BDS and delete the entire BDS folder. Then run C# Builder again and the registry entries should be regenerated properly.

Problem:

I drop a ComponentOne component on my form and build my project. Then I close my project, open it later, build it and I get "Cannot open file licenses.licx. The system cannot find the file specified." What is happening?

Answer:

Currently there is a small problem where the licenses.licx file is not being saved. To workaround this, after you initially build, double click on the generated licenses.licx file and manually save it.

Serial number required for C# Builder Personal Edition non-commer...

Written by Embarcadero USA on . Posted in Usability

Problem:

I have C# Builder Personal non-commercial edition. When I start it, the registration wizard starts and prompts me for a serial number. I do not have a serial number. What do I do?

Answer:

When you downloaded C# Builder Personal non-commercial, an activation file should have been e-mailed to you. Typically this file is titled reg322.txt. First, close down the Registration Wizard. Then, run the License Manager, select License|Import and navigate to the location that you saved the activation file. C# Builder should now be activated and you should not be prompted for a serial number.

C#Builder takes over file associations without prompting

Written by Embarcadero USA on . Posted in Usability

Question: C#Builder seems to have taken over my file associations without asking me. Why is this?

Answer: There is an issue with the C#Builder installer that causes the File Associations dialog to not show up when it should. This happens on Windows XP machines that have network drives mapped. Try unmapping those drives; this should make that dialog appear.

Problem:

I do not have the JRE installed on my machine and I am trying to install Janeva. I am prompted to setup the JRE but it will not allow me to select a directory and then warns me when I cancel it. What do I do?

Answer:

The installer will not automatically install the JRE for you. Ignore the warning you are given and cancel out of the JRE Setup portion of the Install. To install the JRE, you will need to run the executable located in your CD's JRE1.4 directory.

Is the J# Runtime Required by C# Builder?

Written by Embarcadero USA on . Posted in Usability

Synopsis:

During the install, it prompts me whether I want to install the J# redistributable for .NET. Choosing not to install J# redistributable results in an error:

Borland C#Builder requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1, Microsoft .NET Framework v1.1, Microsoft Visual J# .NET v1.1 Redistributable and Microsoft .NET Framework SDK v1.1 to be installed on the machine. Please install the pre-requisites and try again!

Resolution:

J# is not required by C# Builder, so this is an issue with the installer. J# is required by the Janeva technology and therefore if one is not using Janeva then they won't need J# installed.

For now, if you aren't using Janeva and don't want to install J#, don't install Janeva, and then manually uninstall J#. You can uninstall J# from the Add/Remove Programs list.

Is C# Builder support on Windows 2000

Written by Embarcadero USA on . Posted in Usability

Question:

The system requirements list Windows 2000 as a supported operating system. Do any service packs need to be installed for C# Builder to work correctly?

Answer:

C# Builder requires version 1.1 of the .NET Framework SDK to be installed. As a consequence it is required to have at least Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000 installed.
